Process engineeringconcerns the conversion of raw materials into value-added products throughtranslating customers¡¯ needs into production systems in a wide range ofindustries, such as chemical, petrochemical, food, advanced material andpharmaceutical industries. Process engineering hence involves the design, optimization and intensification of chemical and biological processes, which aretypically multiscale problems. In this talk, a brief overview of the wide rangeof research activities related to chemical and process engineering at theUniversity of Surrey will be presented, which include energy and materials, digital & process innovation, water processing technology, health &food, formulations and products. In addition, how a multiscale approach can betaken to tackle challenging problems associated with process engineering willbe illustrated. Furthermore, various options for potential researchcollaboration and partnership in undergraduate and postgraduate education willbe discussed.

Prof. Chuan-Yu (Charley) Wu is a Professor ofChemical Engineering at the Department of Chemical and Process Engineering, theUniversity of Surrey. UK.  He is currently an executive editor for PowderTechnology, a leading peer reviewed journal on particle systems. He recentlyco-authored a monograph on ¡°Particle Technology and Engineering¡± published byElsevier in 2016 and edited two books entitled ¡°Discrete Element Modellingof Particulate Media¡± and ¡°Particulate Materials: Synthesis, Characterisation,Processing and Modelling¡± published by RSC publishing. He alsoedited five journal special issues and published over 100 scientificpapers. He has given more than 60 invited presentations and seminars atinternational conferences, industrial companies and universities worldwide.Prof. Wu is a member of the advisory and editorial board for¡°Particuology¡±, and ¡°Acta Pharmaceutica Sinica B (APSB) ¡±.

Prof. Wu has expertise inparticle technology, discrete element methods, finite element analysis, modelling and simulations, pharmaceutical engineering and granular dynamics. His research has been supported by global pharmaceutical companies includingPfizer, AstraZeneca, Sanofi and MSD, in addition to EPSRC and EU. He recentlycoordinated a EU FP7 consortium on predictive modelling of roll compaction thatconsists of 14 partners and 15 researchers from 8 European countries, with atotal budget of €3.8m and is also leading a new EU H2020 consortium (€4.2m with15 partners) on thermomechanical analysis of particle systems.

Prof. Wu obtained his BSc and MSc from HuazhongUniversity of Science and Technology, and his PhD. on finite element analysisof particle impact problems from Aston University (Birmingham, UK) in 2002. Heworked as a postdoctoral research associate at the Department of Engineering inthe University of Leicester from 2001 to 2003, and at the Department ofMaterials Science and Metallurgy in the University of Cambridge between 2003and 2005. In November 2005, Prof. Wu was awarded a prestigious EPSRC AdvancedResearch Fellowship and joined the University of Birmingham. He was appointedas a senior lecturer in the School of Chemical Engineering at Birmingham inDecember 2008 and a professor in chemical engineering at the University ofSurrey in January 2013.
